Reading Notes: Bhagawat: The Krishna Avatar Part A
I decided to read a comic book this week. I have not read
one yet this semester, and I have been kicking myself for not reading any comic
books or graphic novels for this class. I am finally reading one and I was not disappointed.
I do really enjoy comic books. I enjoy the artwork especially. I think that is
one of my favorite parts about comics. I think the artwork conveys so much information
to the reader and really enlivens the comic. The comic I read had fairly
interesting artwork. It was not unbelievable or extraordinary. The best artwork
I have seen in a comic book would have to be the artwork in The Sandman comics which were written by
Neil Gaiman. Although this comic did not have the best artwork. It was still an
interesting to see and it created a better atmosphere. The drawings helped me
better envision the characters. I have been having trouble imagining the looks
of many characters in the stories we have been reading. The descriptions are
not ones that I would normally run into. It also helped because this was a
story that I had read before. This was the story of Krishna, who is an
incarnation of Vishnu. He is born to Vasudeva, but because a tyrannical king named
Kamsa was told by a divine voice that the eighth child of Vasudeva and Devaki would
kill him, he decided he would kill all the children born to Vasudeva. First of
all, I don’t know why, after 7 children had been born and summarily killed, Vasudeva
and Devaki would decide to have an eighth. Honestly, why did they have any more
children after the first one was killed. It just seems as though they were
torturing themselves. I really don’t get it. I enjoyed reading a comic book but
this story is just kind of weird.
