Reading Notes: Bhagawat: The Krishna Avatar Part D

Krishna faces a lot of attackers in this chapter of the book. The first thing that happened was a python attacked on of the cattle herders and Krishna had to save him. It turned out that the python was just a divine being who had been trapped in that form. This meant that Krishna was able to return him to his true form.

Next Krishna had to deal with an asura named Shankhchooda, who attacked the group of Gopikas who were around Krishna and Balarama. He grabbed a couple of them and tried to kidnap them. He then ran off. Krishna and Balarama caught up with him and scared him by waving tree trunks. Then he ran off again. Krishna chased him and when he caught up with him, he chopped off his head with his hands.

Next Krishna had to fight a raging bull. It seemed at first that he was going to dissuade the bull from attacking and not kill it. He ended up killing it, though. Fairly brutally too. He removed both of the horns and stabbed the bull with them.

Kamsa had been sending these asuras to attack Balarama and Krishna. When he heard that they had all failed, he was furious. He sent out one last arura, and while he waited for him, he plotted a plan to trick Krishna. The asura sent to kill Krishna was a horse. When it attacked Krishna, Krishna caught its mouth with his hand. Krishna then flung the horse so far that when it landed it died.

It was funny later in the chapter, Krishna was invited to some festival. There he picked up a bow and pulled on the string. The bow snapped in half. This is the same thing that happened to Rama in the Ramayana. It really is Vishnu.
