Reading Notes: Bhagawat: The Krishna Avatar Part E
This graphic novel was so engrossing that I had to add read
it one more time. I am glad that I decided to read this one. It is such a good
way to read through the Krishna stories after reading them earlier in the semester.
The last chapter left off with Kamsa attempting to kill both Krishna and
Balarama. Krishna comes back home and is reunited with Vasudeva and Devaki.
That is one of the big payoffs for this chapter because the way in which he was
separated from them. It was such a sad separation and I was so elated when he
was finally reunited with them. Kamsa had been defeated by Krishna and Krishna had
then install Ugrasena as the king. Ugrasena had been the king before Kamsa, but
he had been deposed by Kamsa. This story feels very similar the Ramayana in
that Krishna, Vishnu, is slowly going through and ridding the world of evil, killing
different kings and demons and asuras.
In much the same way that Rama had a mentor, Krishna also
has a mentor in the form of a guru, named Sandipani. This part gets a little
weird. The guru requires that Krishna retrieve his son’s soul from the depths
of Yama. The child had drowned in the ocean, and the father desperately wanted
him back.
Also in this chapter of the graphic novel, the events of the
Mahabharata are introduced. The Pandavas are introduced in this chapter, as
they have just arrived in the city of Hastinapura after being tricked. Krishna
sends an emissary, named Akrura, to meet them.
The name of this chapter is Krishna: The Lord of Dwaraka. Dwaraka is a fortress that Krishna
builds to protect his people after they are attacked by the angry father of
Kamsa’s widows. Krishna then defeats Jarasandha.
