Reading Notes: Bhagawat: The Krishna Avatar Part C
In the third part of the Bhagawat graphic novel, Krishna is
shown to do many things that inspire faith in people. The goal of this chapter
is to outline how he interacts with the people of the village he lives in. It
starts with Krishna taking the clothes of the Gopikas, cow women (in that they
are the wives of men who herd cattle). Krishna hides the clothes while the women
bathe in the river. When they attempt to leave and get dressed, Surprise, their
clothes are not there. Krishna then taunts them about it. This is a very weird
part. The book says that Krishna is attempting to test them and their faith/devotion
to him. All in all, it is a weird section.
Later in the chapter, the town is going to perform a large
yagna because the rainy season has just ended, and they need to pay homage to
the supreme god Indra. Krishna does not think that they should pay homage to Indra,
and instead they should pay homage to their cows and the mountain nearby. He cites
something about Karma and duty to justify this. The people are not totally behind
it, so he creates and illusion on the mountain that convinces the people. The illusion
is the mountain talking to them. This displeases the god Indra and causes him
to attack the village with rain. Krishna thwarts this by picking up the mountain
and sheltering the people of the town beneath it. After thwarting Indra, the
entire town rejoices, and the book shows all the memories of him doing incredible
feats of strength.
Krishna then shows his true form to the people. This part is
weird because the explanation for why he did it is not very good. I guess he
just did it on a whim.
