Week 7 Story: Duryodhana Strikes

                Duryodhana sat alone in his study and puzzled over the popularity of his cousins. Earlier in the day he had walked through the market and only heard mention of his cousins. He heard no mention of him or any of his brothers. This omission angered him greatly. He wanted to step out of the shadow of his cousins and into the light of the public eye. He wanted to be the king. Finally, after he could take no more of the anger he felt, he retired to his bed chambers. Duryodhana wake the next day and left for the palace to meet with his father, Dhritarashtra. On his way he listened for any talk of him and his brothers. He heard nothing. Introduction to an Aspiring Engineer

Hi! I am John Sholeen.  I am a Junior studying petroleum engineering here at OU. I chose petroleum engineering because I wanted to work offshore.  This summer I will be working as a drilling intern in the Gulf of Mexico.   Although my classes were engaging last semester, I was more interested in the machine learning research I was doing.  Last semester I attempted to create and train a convolution neural network to accurately segment images.  I was moderately successful in my attempt.  The network I trained was able to accurately segment images from the training set, but it struggled when presented with new images.  Overall it was a good first step, and I am excited to continue this semester. Over the break I watched the first season of Counterpart , a Starz show starring J. K. Simmons. The dark atmosphere of the show engrossed me in the story and I couldn't stop watching.  The way the plot developed was unexpected and interesting. T...

Week 11 Story: Lying Doesn't Get You Ahead

Seri was a port town with two halves divided by a wide river. One side was significantly more well to do than the other. The less well to do side had a lot of rundown houses, but it was not always so derelict. There was one home which had an implication of wealth, but it no longer showed the opulence of the past. A merchant, who specialized in the sale of brass, copper, and tin objects, was walking down the street and soliciting at each home. He was having almost no luck until he reached the once fancy house. When he knocked on that door, an elderly woman answered, happy to see him. He started into his spiel about how his wares were the best in the city and that owning them would change her life. This woman said that she was in need of some more cooking equipment. She had to inform him that she could not pay though, because since her husband’s death, she had become destitute.
